Why Teach Information Ethics?

  • In the US and other parts of the world, computers are widely used for all variety of tasks. Many professions are information intensive. Colleges and universities require computer use
  • Here in NC, computer skills are required for high school graduation (see http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/computerskills/index.html)
  • Since computers and other information tools are so widely used, and information skills are so valued, it seems imperative to also teach information ethics. To not do so invites problems when people with tool skills lack a conceptual framework for judging their appropriate use.
