Just a few tidbits from a peer school...
- Submitting a proposal for a new undergraduate
major this week. The plan is for 3 new faculty and
~100 students in the major, plus other resources.
- UNC's budget is highly dependent on the whims
of the state of NC. This year, things are not looking
rosey.
- Nevertheless, we have at least two open faculty
positions, an expanding Ph.D. program (currently about 25
in residence), and other areas of growth.
- Some recent grants and projects include:
- Marchionini: Visualization and information systems
- Greenberg & Daniel: Metadata in biological taxonomies (with Heidorn)
- Newby: Information retrieval toolkit
- Sonnenwald: Collaboration in virtual reality
- Hemminger: Data presentation in radiology
- Jones: ibiblio funding (formerly
SunSITE)
- Haas: Sublanguage of documents
- others...
- SILS has outstanding computational resources (a new research
server; a teaching, mail and Web server; a lab of P4 systems with
loads of software; wireless networking throughout the building).
- Although SILS has both IS and LS degrees, there is a common
core and considerable interaction among the students. Most LS
students take electives in the technology areas.
